Photographer and traveller Pentti Sammallahti captures the mysteries of nature throughout his journeys, with a particular focus on the world of birds. Along coastlines, marshes, parks, endless plains, forest clearings, and snow-covered landscapes, birds quietly reveal their presence within these remote environments. Like visual narratives, Sammallahti's black-and-white photographs reflect his extraordinary attention to detail, his masterful use of light to shape space, and his ability to transform vast, silent landscapes into scenes where the sudden appearance of a person or an animal becomes almost magical. Beyond their narrative power, the images stand out for their exceptional tonal richness. Produced using a duotone printing process, they contrast luminous whites, seen in the plumage of swans and flamingos, with deep, velvety blacks, creating remarkable textures and evoking a world in which birds occupy a singular and poetic place. This volume is one of the first two titles in the *Des oiseaux* (*About Birds*) series, a collection that celebrates, through the vision of different artists, the enduring presence of birds in a world where they have become increasingly vulnerable. Complementing the photographs, ornithologist Guilhem Lesaffre explores the intimate relationship between birds and the changing seasons, an essential aspect of their existence. In regions where winter takes hold, the season presents significant challenges, requiring birds to develop strategies for finding food, conserving energy, and adapting their social behaviour. His text offers a thoughtful perspective that resonates with Pentti Sammallahti's evocative winter landscapes and sensitive observations of birdlife.
