Signed; Bruce Davidson - Photographs [Inscribed] - 1978

First edition and first printing. Softcover. 165 pages. The first retrospective monograph on Davidson. Features an introduction by Henry Geldzahler. Includes some of Davidson's best known images from the first portion of his long career with a selection from his seminal book "East 100 Hundred Street." A clean very near fine copy in photo-illustrated wrappers. Signed and inscribed by Davidson on the half title page. A very nice copy as the recipient was an editor of a photography magazine. "Bruce Davidson: Photographs" (1978), published by Agrinde Publications (in cooperation with Summit Books and distributed by Simon & Schuster), is a landmark mid-career retrospective monograph of the acclaimed American documentary photographer Bruce Davidson. The book serves as his first major retrospective monograph, collecting the definitive images from the early decades of his career. The volume is sequenced as a single, cohesive body of work tracing twenty years of Davidson’s passionate search for social identity, intimacy, and the emotional weight of everyday life. It highlights his classic "humanist social documentary" style across several iconic series, including: The Widow of Montmartre (1956): An impressionistic study of an elderly Parisian widow. The Dwarf (1958): Moving behind-the-scenes imagery of a circus performer. Brooklyn Gang (1959): His seminal, intimate look at the lives of a teenage street gang in New York. England and Scotland (1960) & Welsh Miners: Observations of working-class culture and environments in the UK. Civil Rights Movement / American Blacks (1962–1965): Powerful documentation of the fight for equality across the American South. East 100th Street: His legendary, unflinching, yet deeply empathetic portrayal of a single block in East Harlem. The Cafeteria (1976): Deeply poetic, acutely realistic studies of the patrons of a Manhattan cafeteria. Infrastructure and New Jersey: Documenting structural landmarks like the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge under construction. Overall, the book is considered an essential reference for collectors of 20th-century photography and stands as a masterclass in compassionate, long-form documentary storytelling. Copy in good condition. Wear to covers and age toning to some pages at edges. Plates inside in very good condition. Signed and Inscribed by Davidson on title page.
