Sophie Ristelhueber - Operations - 2009

Operations (2009) is a comprehensive retrospective monograph dedicated to the renowned French photographer Sophie Ristelhueber. Conceived in close collaboration with the artist, this extensive 448-page cloth-bound hardcover volume tracks her major works spanning from the early 1980s onward. It was published jointly by Thames & Hudson (London), the Jeu de Paume, the CNAP, and Les presses du réel to coincide with a major retrospective of her work. The book compiles Ristelhueber's photography across war-torn landscapes—including Beirut, Kuwait, Bosnia, and Iraq. Rather than pursuing standard photojournalism or standard documentary representation, her aesthetic focuses on the concept of the "trace". She presents large-scale artworks and installations where landscapes appear in fragments—damaged, rent, and pockmarked. She photographs these "details of the world" as metaphorical scars on a body, recording the violence inflicted by the machinery of war on the earth’s surface. Avoiding the overt geopolitical narratives of individual conflicts, her work interrogates what she defines as the "terrain of reality and collective emotions." Over 400 pages of color and black-and-white illustrations showcasing her installations, exhibition views, and historical imagery. Features three structural essays offering distinct critical viewpoints by prominent French philosopher Bruno Latour, art historian David Mellor, and art critic Thomas Schlesser. Includes an illustrated, heavily researched, and commented chronology alongside a comprehensive bio-bibliography of the artist. Copy in near fine condition.
