Sasanian Carnelian Intaglio with a Royal Portrait in an Elaborately Decorated LATER Silver Ring Circa 5th-6th century AD A magnificent carnelian intaglio engraved with a royal bust in profile, wearing an elaborate headdress with vertical ornamentation. The ruler has a prominent nose, a large eye and stylised locks extending behind the head. The gemstone is mounted in a silver ring with a substantial oval setting encircled by a twisted wire border and an additional band of ornamental scrollwork. The broad shoulders are decorated with symmetrical geometric and foliate motifs in relief.
