Henk Helmantel (1945) is one of the most famous living Dutch painters. He feels strongly connected with the tradition of more than 500 years of Western European painting. Helmantel is generally regarded as a “fijnschilder”. This means that he strives to create as natural a reproduction of reality as possible. He paints many still lifes and interiors of medieval churches and monasteries. He focuses in particular on the Romanesque and early Gothic architecture, both in the Netherlands and other regions in Western Europe. His Christian belief plays an important role in his experience of creation and culture.
