José Cusachs stood out as a remarkable military portraitist. He painted, among others, General Prim, King Alfonso XIII in military uniform and - commissioned by the Mexican Government, Mexican president Porfirio Díaz, for which he received the amount of 20 000 pesos. La huída a Egipto, which can be admired in the Montserrat Monastery and the works Abnegación and Pensamiento Lejano were also painted by him. Most of his works are kept in the modern art museums of Barcelona and Madrid.
He diversified the subject-matters in his works, although he didn’t completely abandon the military scenes and the horse motif, to which he remained faithful during all his career.
