Stoup (1) - Baroque - Wood, bone, leather and shell - Early 19th century

Description
Stoup (1) - Baroque - Wood, bone, leather and shell - Early 19th century
Italy

The ancient stoup presents the wooden crucifix glued on cloth and the figure of the Christ. The peculiarity of the object is the presence of the shell to be used for blessing with holy water. The high quality is the frame with two waves and volutes, which create a rich typically baroque decoration on the image of the crucifix. The crucifix wood has some missing parts at the bottom, which are also found on the upper frame. The left arm of the Christ is glued to the elbow.
Its antiquity, devotional importance and its Venetian origin are evidenced by the presence of the leather on the back: technique used in the creation of Venetian paintings, made on leather, already in the Middle Ages.
