Description:
Marlene Dumas (born 3 August 1953 in Cape Town) is a South African born artist. She lives and works in Amsterdam, since 1976, and is considered a Dutch artist. Dumas was born in 1953 in Cape Town and was raised on a vineyard of her family at the Kuilsrivier, in southwestern South Africa. She studied in the 1970s at the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Kaapstad, where she came into contact with art theory and conceptual art. Photography, and the work of Diane Arbus in particular, however, had the most influence at that time on her work, which led her into the complexity of depicting man.
