Jozef De Veuster, Flemish, 1840-1889, better known as Father Damien and nicknamed ‘the apostle of lepers’, was a missionary on the island called Molokai from 1873 up to his death in April of 1889 where he, as a priest, guided and cared for the colony of lepers that lived there. Selflessly, he helped others and in the end he died of leprosy.
The religious name Damian stems from saint Damian, patron saint of physicians, surgeons, dentists, pharmacists and midwives.
