1st half 20th century - Fair condition, used with visible signs of wear

A quite Seldom Ntomo mask covered with Aluminium ( a rare metal in the time of the mask production)

PROVENANCE: Private Swiss Collection. Typewriter etiquette on the back inscription "Bamana Ba39 Mali"

HEIGHT: H = 50 cm, 62 cm on metal stand ( included in your package ).

ORIGIN: Bamana-Mali

CONDITION: Dry patina. the fine incised Aluminium decoration is oxidized due to aging, making the metal dull . A few horns are missing on the upper part, one horn missing, an one aluminum ring missing (on the right). Left ear missing. (see images)

USE AND SIGNIFICATION: The Ntomo dancers association is a school for the young man, they had to learn to perform the mask at harvest festivals. The number of horns indicated the sex of the mask. (male: 3 or 6, female: 4 or 8, androgyne: 2,5 or 7-like for this mask). The small mouth symbolizes the virtue of thinking before speaking;
