This book is in very lovely condition and very nicely bound (see photos), it is only affected by some small spots of worm holes in the margins on the first pages.
It should also be noted that the title page and the first page are bound in facsimile.
A lovely and complete copy, duodecimo.
This small edition contains the 4 books, after the quarto edition of 1656, which, for the first time, had the complete and finalised text. It is adorned with 115 lovely copper engravings created by H.David based on the drawings by F.Campion and F.Chaveau.
Cornelius had undertaken this work at the request of his confessor and Queen Anne of Austria. The first edition, in 1651, contained only the first twenty chapters. The complete book was published in 1656. The church praised this work, where "poetry speaks the language of the saints so purely".
These small pocket-sized volumes were condemned to a rapid destruction and copies are very rare, says Picot in the Bibliographie Cornélienne. It is perfectly identical to the copy sold (except for the first 2 pages bound in facsimile) under number 129.
