1st half 20th century - Good condition, used with some signs of wear

Belonging to the Sande secret society of Sierra Leone, these masks were reserved to women and were used for a ceremony which celebrates the end of the period of reclusion and the initiation of young women.

The characteristic features of these sorts of masks are always feminine, even when these embody a masculine spirit.

With elongated, half-closed and rounded eyes looking downwards, lips formed by a delicate design, a sophisticated hairdo, a nose of great refinement and a serene forehead. Beautiful and authentic brown patina.

This piece was collected in Liberia, it will surprise you be its powerful and spiritual aesthetic. This piece was used during an initiatory rite.
