Description
Mouse pot - Wood - Baoulé - Côte d'Ivoire
Early 20th century - Good condition, used with some signs of wear

Very Beautiful Baule Mice Pot or “Mice Oracle” from the centre-north of Ivory Coast
This object was meant for divination and accompanied soothsayers during their travels. The soothsayer would place one or several starving mice in the box with sticks, porcupine spines, tortoiseshells and some food. Once the pot was closed, the soothsayer recited incantations. Starving, the single or several mice would feed themselves and unintentionally change the layout of the objects which were then deciphered and interpreted by the soothsayer.
