1st half 20th century - Fair condition, used with visible signs of wear

Rare and mysterious Nomoli, ancient fertility symbol, hard stone figure.

in sitting position ( crouched ) with the hands on the chest.

It is believed that these figures, found by farmers when processing their land, are several hundred years old.

Exact origin / origin is not clear, but they are quite old. The local populations have their own and different stories and explanations about the origin of these stone figures.

The Mende see these as divine messengers, gods of the rice, the kissi find these images of ancestors .

If found, they are often placed in the field of altar / shrines, along the fields and cared for as prosperity and fertility.


Stone is a rarely used material in African sculpture.


Field collected , by former KLM couple, stationed ad Monrovia in the years 1956-1960.
