Tile in Istrian marble depicting the Orphic Egg, worked and carved by hand, from an important private collection of Greek mythological objects. Period: 19th century.
Orphism is a religious movement born in Greece, presumably around the 6th century BC, around the figure of Orpheus. Orphean doctine is as follows:
they believed in divinity and thus in the immortality of the soul;
this implies, in order to avoid the loss of such immortality, the need to lead an entire life of purity. This work was realised after the model of the Orphic egg depicted by Jacob Bryant in 1774.
One of a kind lot, of sporadic availability, with a remarkable patina on the marble.
You can easily hang it on the wall. Small sized, well proportioned and low-weight.
