Mainline History: In the early 1900s, the locomotives then in use were no longer able to cope with the performance requirements demanded for the three steeply inclined sections of the Bayerische Staatsbahn. Therefore, the company Maffei was commissioned to develop and build a strong locomotive for these steeply inclined sections. The result thereof was the tender locomotive type Gt 2 x 4/4. With a length between the buffers of 17 700 mm and a power output of 1080 KW (1470 HP) this locomotive was the largest and strongest tender locomotive in Europe.
The first series was delivered as from 1913. As from 1922 a second series with greater power was delivered. Some locomotives were still in use in Bavaria after 1945.
