Kokeshi are wooden handmade artisanal dolls from Japan. The most prevalent theory is that they appeared during the Tempo period (1830 - 1843) of the Edo era (1603 - 1868) in the mountainous Tohoku region.

During the long winter months, when little work was available for the farmers, they started making kokeshi as toys for their childern. They could not afford the more expensive toys that were available in the larger cities. These toys were spotted by the tourists who came to this Tohoku region known for its wellness in the hot springs. Hence, Kokeshi became a nice souvenir.

There are two main types of Kokeshi: 1) the traditional (or Dento) kokeshi and 2) the creative (or Sosaku) kokeshi. The traditional kokeshi are created following certain, long-established guidlines regarding shapes and styles of painting. The creative kokeshi are free from constrains and have a wide variety of shapes and paint.
