German or Flemish Gothic.
Carved boxwood, with traces of polychromy, would eventually have embedded jet eyes. Small sculpture of private devotion from the 15th century.
This impressive effigy is in line with the Gothic iconographic type of Christ of humility (pagan-mythological model), called "The Cold Stone", a name that has aroused great devotion in Flanders. In the Middle Ages, this moving figure of Christ awaiting crucifixion, was called the God of piety, sitting on a rock at the top of Golgotha, Jesus awaits death, naked, docile, submissive, alone, and crowned with thorns. Classical art represented the mythological god Saturn, the Greek Chronos, identified with a desolate and nostalgic temperament, thoughtful and melancholy. Thus, the iconography of the "Lord of Humility and Patience" is none other than the Christianisation of Saturn's theme, alchemy and hermeticism.
