** Ed. Gerdes, together with P.J. Andriessen, was one of the most popular children's book writers of the second half of the 19th century, but he was also close to this colleague in another way; he went to school in Amsterdam with Andriessen's father. He worked as a preacher in Haarlem and Doetinchem. Gerdes wrote some foreign language textbooks, travel stories and biblical stories. Of all the songs he wrote, “Er ruist langs de wolken een lieflijke Naam” became the best known.
