DAN/BASSA Passport Masks from Liberia are very rare, but those from Guinea are even rarer.
This authentic, ancient mask stands out by its magnificent patina with many details.
The forehead is crossed by thin lines, whereas little dots enhance the face. The nose scarifications associate it to the Bassa people.
Masks from this ethnic group have a very characteristic form, with a pointy chin.
Miniature masks, also named “passport masks”, are carved to welcome ancestral spirits.
Their main function consisted in protecting the carrier, especially against witchcraft.
These are also used as identity cards.
Sold with its personalised professional stand.
Dimensions: 30 cm.
Purchased in a gallery specialised in African arts, from a former collection of passport masks.
