Johann Ludwig Gottfried (1584 † May 1633) was a theologian, translator, author, editor and proofreader.

Through a Latin retelling of Ovid's Metamorphoses he came in 1619 Oppenheim in relation to the publishing house de Bry and worked from then on with his versatile language skills and education as a valued collaborator of Oppenheimer and Frankfurt publishers such as Johann Theodor de Bry and de Brys son in law Matthäus Merian the older. He provided translations, epigrams, paraphrases and compilations for many extensive publications of these publishers. He oversaw several publishing projects as editor and proofreader. In 1624 he came to Frankfurt as a proofreader. In order to be able to devote himself undisturbed to the work of translators and authors for the Frankfurt publishers (especially for Merian).

Matthew Merian the Elder (1593 - 1650) was a Swiss-German engraver and publisher from the distinguished Basel family Merian. He published numerous maps, city views and chronicles. His main work is the Topographia Germaniae. The Frankfort branch of the family founded by Matthäus Merian in the 17th century led one of the largest European publishers.
Of his artistic works, such as this book, there is one more thing to mention: the 234 illustrations of the German Bible in the translation of Martin Luther (1545), printed by Lazarus Zetzner in Strasbourg; The engravings personally made by Merian have been continually inserted into the biblical text, therefore this Bible is also called Merian Bible.
