Sold with a certificate of authenticity by Mr.Thierry Tuffier, expert of Norman School painters.
Born to parents from Flanders and of modest condition, he lived in Déville and then started the School of Fine Arts; he fought hard against the ridiculousness of official painting (helped by his great friend Charles Angrand).
He travelled extensively to Paris from 1880 to 1888. In 1895, he founded a "Académie libre" and divided his time between the studio on Rue des Charrettes and the Normandy countryside where he trained many young painters.
In 1900, and again in 1902, he exhibited at Durand-Ruel’s in Paris. In 1904 he moved to Petit-Couronne, where he died in 1912.
He was a friend of the great Impressionists Pissarro, Monet, Sysley who influenced him. He said melancholy, "I would have given only a small flute sound, but it was right."
He will remain the painter par excellence of the Seine Valley. He sung with such a charme the metamorphoses of the day, the insensitive effects that light gives to the form of things, the importance of shadows, the transparency of half-tints, the indefinable coloring of waters that he has so often and so differently interpreted with so much truth.
"No one among the most renowned has expressed with such sincere emotion the fluid grace of these waters, their slow flow under clear limpid skies reflected therein, among the light mists blurring the scenery of its banks. In this Seine in Petit-Couronne, in Biessard, there are paintings by Delattre which are first-rate works, discrete harmonies of a surprising appearance width, a fluid, vaporous, airy mood, where fumes unfold, where fires light up on the water."
