Italy - Early 20th century
|Object:||Icon (More lots)|
|Estimated Period:||Early 20th century|
|Country of Origin:||Italy|
|Condition:||Good condition - used with small signs of aging & blemishes|
Beautiful and original icon, likely dating back to the 1920s/30s, depicting St. George, who was honoured as a martyr and depicted in the classical iconography as a Roman soldier in armour. After the fall of Constantinople, he was increasingly depicted on a white horse while piercing a dragon and associated to Dt. Demetrios, the latter on a red horse in the act of killing an enemy. The icon has an excellent inscription on a golden background with marvellous craquelure which adds a special charm. Condition as per photos, with some very small shortcomings and tiny colour losses which do not affect this authentic work of art. Excellent condition, very well preserved considering its age. A museum piece for connoisseurs! It has been slightly restored in the past, due to presence of woodworms. It has only old exit holes.
15 x 19.5 cm x a 2.5 cm thickness.
