Alexander Thomson was a Scottish Edinburgh based gun smith recorded at 3 Drummond Street, 1820, 16 Union Place 1833-44 also at 3 South Street & Andrew street 1840-41. Alexander Thomson & son are recorded at 95 Princes Street Edinburgh 1869-75 & 3 Hanover Street Edinburgh 1876-C1878 (see page 347 Of British Gunmakers Volume 2 by Brown).
This is an excellent Victorian double barrel under lever sporting shotgun by Alexander Thomson. It has Damascus steel barrels set side by side. The barrels have a central flat top barrel rib & brass bead fore sight. The barrel rib is engraved ‘Alexr Thomson & Son’. The barrels smooth bores are clean like mirroir. Very tight lockup. The underside of the barrels have black powder proof marks. The wrist of the wallnut stock has a void silver shield escutcheon and a two piece steel butt plate. Very nice bleued trigger guard and loading lever. Action plates and hammers have high quality tooled decoration with animal scenes.
