Description
SACROBOSCO, Johannes de. - Libellus de anni ratione. - 1547
Astronomy - Quantity: 1 - Book

8vo. 44 unnumbered ll., A-E8 F4. Woodcut vignette to title, 5 half-page or smaller woodcut astronomical diagrams, decorated initials. Two small ink splashes to extreme outer edge, light age browning, occasional minor marginal spotting. A good copy, on thick paper, in 17th-century Netherlandish dark brown goatskin, newer endpapers, double gilt ruled, outer border gilt to a roll of palmettes and fleurons, centre panel with gilt floral and pointillé cornerpieces, gilt lozenge-shaped centrepiece surrounded by pointillé spiralling branches and semé of gilt stars, a.e.g., sympathetic repair to corners, spine repaired with loss of gold-tooling.

The scarce third Flemish edition - in an exquisite, very appropriate 17th-century Netherlandish binding - of this important work in the history of computing by the major 13th-century astronomer Johannes de Sacrobosco. It is a critique of the Julian calendar which, according to Sacrobosco, had accumulated a temporal error of 10 days since its establishment in the 1st century BC.

Pettigree & Walsby, Netherlandish Books 17021. Not in Brunet, USTC or EDIT16.
