Otto van Rees - Stilleven met torso

Description
Otto van Rees - Stilleven met torso
Gouache - Not signed - framed in passepartout and behind glass - 1949

At the beginning of the 20th century, Otto van Rees was often in the company of art circles with the international modernists (fauvism, cubism, dadaism) and collaborated with avant-guards as Jan Toorop, Kees van Dongen and Jean Arp. He left for Paris when he was twenty in 1904 and rented a space in the illustrious studio building, where he got to know Braque and Picasso. The influence of French cubism becomes visible in the abstract styling of his paintings and experimental collages around 1910. Van Rees focussed increasingly on painting portraits and French landscapes in a more figurative and dreamy style.
