A Big Baule Seated Maternity Figure

Provenance: Woolley and Wallis, UK 2015 ( the pictures with white background are from Woolley and taken in 2015. ) The pictures on the black background are slightly underexposed.

The Baule are people from the Ivory Coast.

Baule figures can be among the most elegant and designed pieces in Africa. Many show careful execution of face, coiffure and scarification details, with refined forms but no loss of expressiveness and power. The quiet, dignified figures embody spirits from the other world. They functioned as the home of the spirit world and had to be treated with care.
