In 1979, a then unknown Madonna Louise Ciccone replied to an ad by Lee Friedlander seeking subjects and was paid a small amount to be photographed nude, signing a release form. The results are a startling portrait of a young, independent, strong woman before her meteoric rise to fame where she would be become universally known as Madonna, captured by one of the greatest living American photographers.
