Exceedingly difficult to find - an original Heart Shield Bible in great condition! These were designed to fit into the uniform chestpocket. The metal plates were to prevent a bullet from reaching the soldier’s heart (which they did on several occasions, see attached screenshot). The bible offered for auction is dated approx. 1944 and named to Charles W Jackson from Brooklyn, NW (see attached photo). The surface of the bible has a great patina and had the text: May this comfort and protect you'' and much of the gold finish. The bible and its shield are in nice condition; some wear as expected for its age of 80 years.
''Like many soldiers in World War II, John Phillips received a pocket bible before shipping off to Europe – a gift from the President. In the Battle of the Bulge, Phillips got caught in a German ambush and was shot five times. As he lay in the snow, thinking he was dying, he reached for his heart. There, he found his Bible—with a bullet lodged in it! The Bible had stopped a bullet headed straight for his heart.'' This is the version inscribed with ''God's Weapon''. As seen from the photo's, the cover is only loosely attached to the booklet; please caution when opening this. However, this could be easily repaired.
Unique 100% original item for your US WW2 collection; will for sure be a centerpiece in your collection!
