Original woodblock print - Tsukioka Taiso Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) - 'Tsuki no monogurui - Fumihiroge' 月のものぐるひ 文ひろげ (Lunacy - Unrolling Letters) - From the series "Tsuki hyaku sugata" 月百姿 (One Hundred Aspects the Moon) - Japan - 1890 (Meiji 23)
"Moon of Insanity" from the loved "!00 Aspects of the Moon" series. Scenery: Ochiyo got the message that her lover passed away. Driven crazy by her grief, she wandered, while she rolled his letters in and out high up in the air, such that they sometimes looked like twins with the moon behind the clouds.
I purchases this print fifteen years ago at the Japan Print Gallery in London, who described the quality as 'very good'.
