A impressive wooden Baule maternity figure from Ivory Coast.
The figure embodies a number of symbolic elements as shrine figure; she is a ’mother’ and for the diviner she is a place of residence for the spirit of the bush to reside ready to be called upon by the diviner. This well carved figure exhibits typical Baule concern with the esthetics of the presentation of the beauty of the women and her child. Her hair is carefully combed and modeled and beautifully carved scarification's show her as a mature and prominent woman of her village.
Good condition, with clear traces of tribal use. The right arm of the child and the backside of the mothers coiffure are damaged. Great dark oily aged patina.
