Icon, Russian, Savior Not Made by Human Hands (Mandylion) - Wood - Second half 19th century

Description
Icon, Russian, Savior Not Made by Human Hands (Mandylion) - Wood - Second half 19th century
Russia

19th century, Central Russian. Egg tempera and gesso on wood. Two splints top and bottom.
In New Testament times King Abgar of the Syrian city of Edessa fell ill and sent a messenger to Jesus to request healing. Christ pressed a cloth to his face, miraculously imprinting it with his image, and sent the cloth to Abgar. He was healed through the miraculous cloth. Because the image appeared miraculously and was not painted, it is called "The Image Not Made By Hands on Holy Cloth", or the Greek word for "cloth" Mandylion, which is held by two angels.
