Relatively large antique Russian icon: “St. John the Baptist” from the second half of the 19th century. Hand-painted with egg tempera colour on a wooden panel with chalk background. Typical method of icon production in 18th and 19th century tsarist Russia. Relatively detailed painting. Perfectly matched colour contrasts. Warm colours. The face and robes of the saints stand out. Typical patterns/decorations are attached to the edge of the icon. The icon is in good condition and has typical age-related traces of wear in the form of colour chips and abrasions, scratches, bumps (especially on the bottom left) and dirt (see photos). The painting has craquelure. Partly restored. With inscriptions. The inscriptions are clearly legible. The wooden panel has two vertical tears which are hardly visible, i.e. the painting is affected only insignificantly by them. Moreover, this part was stabilised with a bracket on the top of the icon. Heavy, solid wooden board. Both transverse wooden laths are missing on the back.
A piece for collectors and connoisseurs. Very expressive and finely painted icon.
All details are clearly visible in the photos. The photos are part of the description.
