Nicolaus de Lyra. Postilla super epistolas et evangelia quadragesimalia. 144 nn. Leaf 2 columns. 48 lines (text surrounded by comments). Got. Type. Lettering space: 14.5 x 9.5 cm. Format: 17 x 12.3 cm. With 2 large woodcut printer’s marks in red on the title, in black at the end as well as several up to 8-line woodcut initials, title in red print. Flexible parchment around 1600 (somewhat browned and slightly rubbed) using a sheet of manuscript from the end of the 14th century. Venice, Johann Hamann for Octavianus Scotus, 13.XII.1494.

– The exegetical remarks on the epistles and passages from the Gospels, which deal with the event of Pentecost. The author is the first great Bible interpreter of the High Middle Ages, Nicolaus de Lyra (1270-1349). The postilla appeared for the first time in 1471-1472 

– in the “pocket format” which was unusually small for the incunable period and which allowed every clergyman to take the work with them when traveling. Up to now incunabula had mainly appeared as folio prints. 

– Title with several, slightly later ink entries, numbers etc., a little finger-stained, but hardly discolored, an initial nicely colored, slightly trimmed in the upper margin, with isolated (also partly overlapped) contemporary entries, the last pages and front end with flat hs . Entries, slightly damp stained towards the end, but overall a clean, good copy of this extremely rare small (sic) pocket incunabula. At the end of the 16th or beginning of the 17th century, the pretty copert tape was wrapped with calfskin braids around the block, which was dyed red at the cut.
