The periscope artillery compass PAB-2M is the main instrument of the artillery (mortar) battery and division. It is designed to measure:  magnetic azimuths (compasses);  horizontal and vertical angles on the ground;  distances to points on the ground using the range finder method with an external base (using a special two-meter rail). The device can be used at an observation point, at a firing position, as well as during topographic work on the attachment of elements of battle formations and to solve the following tasks: a) at the observation post:  determine the main direction;  measure horizontal angles between the main direction and the goals;  measure the elevation angles of targets;  determine the magnetic azimuths of directions to the target;  mark the main implement of the battery;  measure deviations and the height of the gaps;  monitor goals; b) at the firing position:  hang up the main direction of fire;  give the main gun a direction along a given compass;  measure shelter angles;  smash the front of the battery.   When working with the device, horizontal and vertical angles are counted up to an accuracy of one division of the goniometer of the exact scales of the compass 0-01. The accuracy of orientation of the device along the magnetic arrow is characterized by a median error not exceeding 0-01. 2.
