Lewis Carroll / Philip Gough - Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass - 1949

Original dust jacket, publisher’s white pictorial boards with designs in blue and red, gilt lettering to spine, red and white headband, top edges blue, illustrated endpapers (printed in blue and red), 8 colour plates, 23 line drawings, 287 pages, 21.2 x 13.9 cm. First edition, 1949 (undated). Published by the Heirloom Library. Lovett 317. This scarce edition of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ is delightfully illustrated by the English artist Philip Gough (1908-1986), who provides 8 colour plates plus 23 line drawings, somewhat in the style of Rex Whistler. Gough studied at the Liverpool School of Art and Chelsea School of Art, London, originally training as a stage designer. He shared Whistler’s stylistic interest in the Regency period, and is particularly known for his jacket designs for novelist Georgette Heyer’s series of Regency romances. Gough’s ‘Alice’ was reprinted several times, but the true first (undated) edition of 1949, as described by Lovett, is uncommon – particularly in the original dust jacket, as here. Condition: Contents crisp, clean overall. Usual age-toning to paper, a few pale smudges/finger-marks, a few small bumps to page edges, foxing throughout (mostly light; heaviest at front of book), previous owner’s name (in child’s hand) to list of plates (see photos), several small, light water marks to lower edges (heavier to last few leaves). Frontispiece professionally replaced (previously missing); replacement plate salvaged from second, breaker, copy (also a first edition); plate with two small tears, a little bumping/creasing to upper corner. Endpapers with slight foxing, a few small marks, trace of penciled price (erased). Edges of page block with a little foxing; blue top colour partly worn away. Binding tight, with slight lean. Boards and spine with foxing, discoloration and marks as shown, bumping/slight wear to extremities. Unclipped dust jacket with creasing, soiling, chipping, discoloration, tears and marks as shown; supplied in new (removable) archival sleeve.
