[TITE-LIVE [INCUNABLE] - IMPRESSION GOTHIQUE] Les Décades de Titus Livius, translatées en françoys (par Pierre Bercheure ou Berchoire). Volume I alone (of 3 published) containing the 10 pounds of the 1st decade. Paris, En la Grant Rue St-Jacques (Jean Dupré), 1486, small in-fol., full stocking. olive green, ornate ribbed spine
decorated with gilded fleurons and compartments (post. bindings, circa late 18th century, some light surface damage), 13 ff prelim. and 368 ff numbered [3 sheets prelim. missing pieces including 176 blanks, a1 (blank), a8, b8 (blank), the text is quite complete with all of its sheets, only the 1st sheet is reinforced in the lower margin and and sheet 176 has a small tear on the corner with the loss of some words]. Good copy in a dark binding.
This very rare edition printed in a beautiful Gothic font, in 2 columns with 35 lines. The font is that which was used for Lancelot du Lac printed in 1488 as well as others published at the same time by Jean Dupré. Five initials are painted red and blue and numbered. Capital letters and headings are painted red. This book contains 10 pretty vignettes engraved on
wood in the text [Jean Dupré was the first Parisian typographer who introduced engraving into books].
This 1st volume of the Décades de Tite-Live, trans. in the Middle Ages by P. Bercheure, French Benedictine scholar, prior of St-Eloy, is very rare and the copy offered here is very crisp inside. On the face of it, there is only a complete copy of the 3 vol. (at the British Library) and scattered volumes in large French libraries (B.N., Ste-Geneniève, Mazarine) or foreign.
