In 1593/1594 the city of Coevorden was under siege by Spanish troops under Francisco Verdugo. The attempted capture of the city failed after 31 weeks of siege, when a Dutch army under the command of Prince Maurice of Orange marched on the city and lifted the siege. After this victory Maurice continued to the city of Groningen which was still loyal to the Spanish King and laid siege on that city. After two months, the city surrendered. This medal commemorates both events.
Obverse: Representation of the city of Groningen besieged by troops of the United Provinces
Reverse: Inscription within beaded border
