Horace

Quintus Horatius Flaccus.

Birminghamiae [Birmingham], Typis Johannis Baskerville [John Baskerville], 1770.

1 quarto volume (297 x 235 mm), long grain red morocco (period English binding), gilded dentelle framing the boards, decorated smooth spine, inner roulette, all edges gilt, [4]-344 pages (complete). Slightly rubbed joints, slightly browned frontispiece. Good condition.

Edition illustrated with a frontispiece engraved by Henriquez (with a beautiful frame), a title vignette engraved by Le Grand as well as four figures by Gravelot, engraved by Lainé, Leveau, Le Vasseur and Godfroy; edition not listed by Cohen, but published in 1762 in duodecimo format, and reimposed in quarto.

During the 18th century, Baskerville editions, aiming at a luxury clientele, caused a sensation by using vellum paper according to the Whatman process. Baskerville set up a special press to print finer and sharper characters (characters inspired by Grandjean’s Romain du Roi) dedicated to this paper which would have a successful future during the 19th century. The typographic result, notably through the use of new inks, was quite exceptional for the time and evoked the later creations by Didot. This edition of Horace is one of Baskerville’s final creations and the first in quarto format. Curiously, the Baskerville font would rapidly fall into disuse. It would later be rediscovered, and was brought to the United States when its inventor died, this is why it is found in the Declaration of Independence.

A pleasant copy.
