Volume CLXVI 1924 (full year) Published at The Office, London, 1924 The poem in the magazine is called "Teddy Bear" in Punch magazine in February 1924, was the first appearance of the famous character Winnie-the-Pooh, first named "Mr. Edward Bear" by Christopher Robin Milne. In one of the illustrations of "Teddy Bear", Winnie-the-Pooh is shown wearing a shirt which was later coloured red when reproduced on a recording produced by Stephen Slesinger. This has become his standard appearance in the Disney adaptations. Nice little story: On his first birthday, Christopher Robin Milne — son of A.A. Milne — was given a teddy bear. That bear became the inspiration for the Winnie-the-Pooh tales, the first of which appeared in 1924 (see picture). This volume of Punch Magazine comtains the whole year, January-December 1924. The volume contains twenty-five of the poems from A.A.Milne's When We Were Very Young (including the famous poem Teddy Bear, the first ever appearance of the future Winnie-the- Pooh) also Christopher Robin first appearance in Changing Guard at Buckingham Palace. These poems were published in Punch before they were published in a book. Then, only one year later, these poems with the drawings where published in the book "When We Were Very Young" by A.A. Milne and illustrated by E.H. Shepard - Methuen, London (see last picture, not part of the sale). When We Were Very Young begane a Huge best-selling book of poetry by A. A. Milne. Several of the verses were set to music by Harold Fraser-Simson. The book begins with an introduction entitled "Just Before We Begin", which, in part, tells readers to imagine for themselves who the narrator is, and that it might be Christopher Robin. Punch, or The London Charivari, was a British weekly magazine of humour and satire established in 1841 by Henry Mayhew and wood-engraver Ebenezer Landells. Historically, it was most influential, when it helped to coin the term "cartoon" in its modern sense as a humorous illustration. It featured lots of well know artist, cartoonists and authors.
