Mandau - Murut Gayang - Maleisië
This is an antique Murut gayang (war sword) from North West Borneo.
It has a heavy, thick and long (60 cm) steel blade with floral decorations and four brass dot inlays.
Its gayang blade is not concave/convex, like the ilang/mandau Borneo parang, but even sided, like, for instance, a jimpul.
The well patinated antler hilt is of typical Murut shape with a sitting person with an abstract face and a four petal head hunting motif at its back. At its top it has a textile inserted, perhaps once containing human hair.
It has a well carved scabbard, which shows Kayanic origin. It has a traditional flat shell as belt buckle and four multicoloured rattan knots, which indicates high status. The scabbard fits the blade perfectly.
