Biography
Morikawa Sobun (1847-1902)
Japanese painter of the Meiji era.
Born in Kyoto in 1847.
Name: Eiken. His nickname was Shisei.
Learned the Shijo School painting method from Maekawa Gorei and Hasegawa Gyokuho.
Became a teacher at the Kyoto Prefectural School of Painting in 1888.
He received many awards at domestic and international exhibitions.
Died in 1902 at the age of 56.
Watanabe Kokan (1877-1938)
Born in Shiga Prefecture.
His name is Kohei.
Also known as "Kyogyo-do" and "Yugyo-do".
Studied under Morikawa Sobun.
Formed the Japan Free Painting School with Iguchi Kashu, Ikeda Keisen, Ueda Banshu, Hayashi Bunto and others.
Died in 1938 at the age of 61.
