A Petrified Wood Slice from an Araucaria tree trunk, with truly wonderful colouration. These are found in Madagascar near a town called Ambilobe, and date from the Triassic Period, 220 million years old. The Araucaria Tree is a type of conifer that grew in the Triassic. Petrified Wood is actually wood turned to stone through a process called permineralisation. The organic matter is gradually replaced by minerals, and the amazing colours depend totally on the type of minerals that replace the wood. The outer part still has the appearance of tree bark! This is a beautiful and unusual display fossil for the home. Size: 34 cm x 27 cm x 6 cm thick. Weight 6 kg. This item ships from our UK office fully tracked.
