These two tables, one large and one small, are decorated with traditional peony and arabesque patterns in maki-e, an intricate Japanese lacquer art form where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to create detailed designs. The smaller table boasts delicate openwork carvings of plum blossoms and a bush warbler, symbols of the arrival of spring and often associated with perseverance and renewal. The larger one features expertly crafted openwork depictions of pine trees and birds, which are emblematic of longevity and auspiciousness, conveying wishes for eternal youth and happiness. Please note that the upper panel of the larger table is detached but does not hinder its functionality.
