The works of Pierre Louÿs illustrated with erotic plates in black or in colour by Mariette Lydis: - Aphrodite, - Les Chansons de Bilitis, - Archipel, - Sanguines, - La Femme et le pantin, - Les Aventures du roi Pausole, - Psyché. A limited edition to 5,160 numbered copies on Wove paper de Chiffon. Volumes are leather bound, top edge is gilt, marbled end-papers. Good overall condition: gilt and leather on the back are quite fade however, slip cases are broken, few foxing, other defects are minor. ¶ Mariette Lydis (1887–1970) was an Austrian-Argentine painter. Soon recognized as an up-and-coming avant-garde artist, she alternated residence in Buenos-Aires and Paris, illustrating works for Guy de Maupassant, Colette, Baudelaire, Rimbaud, and Bella Moerel and Henry James.Throughout her career she was influenced by the Japanese artist Tsuguharu Fourjita. Along with her illustrations, Lydis was known for her lithographic depictions celebrating lesbian and bisexual relationships. She illustrated women in the active-passive heterosexual relationship stereotype by portraying one woman with slightly masculine-looking features. Critics of her work in this style often described the illustrations as "perverse" and compared her work to Tamara de Lempicka, a female Polish painter. Today, her works are displayed in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University, and Davidson Galleries in Seattle, Washington.
