Nice Kutani’ware stoneware Buddhistic standing figure in the shape of the deity Hotei 布袋. He has a joyful impression, while carrying his large cloth bag 布袋 (nunobukuro) around his shoulders, and holding a short staff in his hand. He is clad in colourful loose robes and with his large belly exposed.
Hotei is the god of contentment and happiness, guardian of children, patron of bartenders, and one one of Japan’s ‘Seven Lucky Gods’ 七福神 (Shichifukujin).
At the bottom a 2-character seal: ‘Kutani’ 九谷.
