Myths and mysteries shroud the origin of the Maasai people. The race is considered a hybrid between the Nilotic people from the Nile region, and the Hamites, originating from northern Africa. Upon observing Maasai adornments, one can note certain similarities with those of the ancient Romans, who once occupied North Africa. The Maasai sword resembles the short Roman war sword; the hairstyle of the warriors mirrors the shape of the Roman helmet; their cloak and sandals are of Roman style.
Among the wide variety of beaded ornaments worn by warriors (morans), one notable piece is a narrow belt used to carry the scabbard of the short sword (simi or seme), adorned with a backplate. This belt is traditionally made of leather onto which glass beads are sewn.
This very elegant and beautifully crafted specimen likely dates from the 1950s or 1960s, as evidenced by the quality and colors of the European-quality beads (today, most glass beads are of Chinese origin) and the patina of the leather.
