Presenting a traditional basket crafted by the Hausa people of northern Nigeria. Historically, these baskets were employed to store grains or other valuable commodities. Handwoven from grass and lined with leather along the edges and base, each basket is meticulously adorned with hand-sewn cowrie shells. The intricate weaving is visible on the interior, showcasing the craftsmanship of the Hausa artisans.
Cowrie shells have always been highly valued by many African cultures and have had multiple uses throughout history. They are made into jewelry and hair ornaments, sewn onto prestigious garments, used in religious rituals and as protective amulets, and up until the late 19th century they were even used as money. Small, lightweight, easy to handle and difficult to counterfeit, these durable shells had all the qualities necessary for use as currency.
Basket in nice shape and good condition.
