German Antiphonary leaf, sheep skin parchment, Gregorian chants, 1500 or earlier
This magnificent lat medieval antiphonary leaf was most likely created in the Cologne area (Rhineland) around the year 1500, at the time when Europe discovered the New World. The early musical notation and the Latin text provide a unique insight into the world of Gregorian chants, which were sung to the glory of God in the great churches of the old world. The format is huge - so that the music and texts can be performed even in poor candlelight, as was common in the Middle Ages. Are you ready for a real piece of the Middle Ages in your apartment, a piece of religious and musical history that is more than 500 years old? With two beautifully painted initials. The book page is elaborately framed with double glazing. Visible format approximately 13 x 20 inches. Frame approximately 18.5 x 25 inches. The front of the frame is gilded.
