Excellent bust in one piece in rosewood with the representation of Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism.
Buddha's head has a peaceful expression with eyes lowered in quiet contemplation. Buddha's peaceful countenance emanates harmony. His eyebrows follow an arch that leads directly to his well-formed nose. His earlobes are stretched from his princely youth when he wore heavy gold earrings. He has a pronounced third eye on his forehead and a large number of curls on his head that resemble snail shells.
Gautama Buddha was born in 463 BC as Siddhartha Gautama, a prince in a small tribal kingdom of the Shakya clan in the southern region of Nepal. Dissatisfied with palatial life, Siddhartha renounced his life as a prince and became a wandering ascetic dedicated to finding the answer to pain in himself.
He is revered by Buddhists as a fully enlightened being who taught a path to Nirvana (literally disappearance or extinction), liberation from ignorance, attachment, rebirth and suffering.
